(St Catherine's Lighthouse, Isle of Wight, England)

An addition to your lighthouse visit plans for next year! Michael Walter of Maritime Heritage Tours reports that his company had a very successful debut in 2002. St Catherine's Lighthouse on the south coast of the Isle of Wight was opened for the first time under a licence from Trinity House. Specially trained staff manned the lighthouse, giving a heritage presentation and a guided tour which included climbing up the tower into the Lantern room. Individuals, families and groups visited, including an 80 year old man who had been born at the lighthouse and celebrated his birthday by returning for a party hosted by Maritime Heritage Tours. A vintage car club also used the light as the venue for one of their rallies. These visits and the educational visits by parties of schoolchildren from both island and mainland schools made for a successful first year of operation.
